What is an IUD?

An IUD or Intra Urine Device is a small contraceptive device that is placed in a woman’s uterus. It is a kind of long-acting reversible contraception (LARC). It means that it can be an effective form of birth control. It can last for three to 10 years. The period of its effectiveness depends on the type of IUD.

One of the benefits of this type of contraceptive is that it is 99 percent effective. Also, the procedure to implant the IUD in a person’s uterus only takes five to ten minutes. The procedure is safely done by a nurse and a doctor.

IUDs work by preventing the sperm and the egg from attaching themselves on the wall of the uterus after fertilization.
