Some would say her case is a medical impossibility; others would even chalk it up to witchcraft. Nevertheless, the case of Lina Medina wouldn’t be forgotten.
In the early spring of 1939, a shocking world record was made in a remote village of Ticrapo in Peru. At only 5 years and 7 months old, a girl that goes by the name of Lina Medina became the world’s youngest mother. How did this happen?
Months prior to her childbirth, the young girl’s worried parents brought her to a hospital. The cause of their concern is their daughter’s bulging belly, which has been increasingly growing for the past few months. At first, they suspected it was a tumor.
However, the doctors took one look at the young girl and already knew that they were witnessing history as it unfolded.
Much to her parents’ surprise, they found out that their five-year-old daughter is actually bearing a child! When they took her to the doctor, she was already seven months into her pregnancy. A few weeks later, Lina Medina gave birth to a healthy baby boy.
Rare medical condition
How can a girl give birth at such a young age?
This is the question that baffled doctors all over the world, and they soon found out the answer. After a few tests, it turns out that Lina Medina has a rare medical condition which only affects one in every 10,000 children.
Called as ‘precocious puberty,‘ this condition causes a child to reach sexual maturity at a young age. In Lina’s case, she already has wide hips, budding breasts, and post-pubescent bone growth. Experts also suspect that she has started menstruating as early as the age of three.
Lina’s case attracted attention from the media. Every aspect of her life was scrutinized by the public. Yet above all, people were determined to know who impregnated the young girl.
Fingers pointed at her father, Tiburelo Medina, who was accused of taking advantage of his own daughter. Soon after, he was arrested but was later on released due to a lack of evidence. Until today, Lina refuses to say a word about the biological father of her son.
Lina Medina’s son, Gerardo, was named after the doctor who helped her gave birth. Gerardo grew up thinking Lina was her sister until he was about 10 years old.
Although the public was eager to know more about her, Lina and her family chose to keep their silence. However, some doctors were fortunate enough to witness everything first-hand.
Only two low-resolution images survived which showed Lina’s pregnant body at that time. Ever since the controversy, Lina did everything that she could to live a quiet and peaceful life. Later on, she married and had a son with her husband.
Nobody alive surely knows the whole story, and only her surviving descendants are the living testimony of the world’s youngest mother.
